Joseph R. Evans is a Scientific Advisor with Patti, Hewitt & Arezina LLC. Mr. Evans provides technical assistance in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and the rendering of opinions on patent infringement and validity and on product clearance and patentability concerning the biotechnology, life sciences, medical, chemical, and pharmaceutical arts.

Mr. Evans is also pursuing M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in the Medical Scientist Training Program at Northwestern University. He is a Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Vince Cryns in the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine. Mr. Evans centers his research on the anti-apoptotic properties of a small heat shock protein, involving use of a wide variety of biomedical research techniques, including cell culture, cell and molecular biology, protein biochemistry, pharmacology, and biomedical informatics.

Mr. Evans previously worked as a Research Technician in the Howard Hughes lab of Dr. Kevin Campbell at the University of Iowa, where he studied the properties of a putative calcium ion channel using fluorescent spectroscopy. In the summer of 1999, Mr. Evans was a Vacation Student at the Institute for Cancer Research in London, where he used molecular biology and protein biochemistry to investigate the active site of the enzyme sphingomyelinase. Upon returning to the University of Iowa, Mr. Evans was awarded a Trainee Grant by the American Digestive Health Foundation to work as a Research Assistant in the lab of Dr. Klaus Bielefeldt investigating the then-novel slow inactivation properties of sodium channels using cell culture, primary cell isolation, pharmacology, and electrophysiology. This research has been published as articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national conferences.

In 2001, Mr. Evans received a B.S. in Physics with Honors and High Distinction from the University of Iowa, where he was a Presidential Scholar and a Department of Physics and Astronomy Shoemaker-Strickler Scholar. In 2000, Mr. Evans was admitted to the Golden Key Honor Society, for which he served as Awards Co-Chair, and Phi Beta Kappa.
